The Spring Hill College men's soccer team defeated the University of St. Thomas (Texas) 5-2 in a non-conference home match at Library Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Daniel Ochoa of Miami, Fla., put the Badgers up 1-0 in the 9th minute when he accepted a pass from the right side by sophomore Jabulani Thompson of Miami six yards in front of the goal and stuck it home.
The Fightin' Celts (1-1) answered back after the break when in the 49th minute Irvinn Ramirez scored with an assist by Chirs Natera to knot the match at 1-1.
Junior Nick Link of Elizabethtown, Ky., put the Badgers back on top when he successfully converted a penalty kick in the 57th minute after Andrade Giouliano of UST was caught with a handball in the box.
In the 69th minute, sophomore Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., gave SHC some breathing room with an unassisted goal to make it a 3-1 Spring Hill advantage.
The bulge grew to 4-1 just nine minutes later when freshman Andrew McInnis of Mandeville, La., scored his third goal of the year in the 78th minute with an assist from sophomore Tanyi Mubang of Tampa.
The Celts refused to surrender, however, and Jamie Head cleaned up a loose ball following a corner kick with a scoring poke from three yards out past freshman SHC keeper Jacob Files of Clinton, Miss., in the 80th minute.
With just 9 seconds remaining in the game, the Badgers added the icing to the cake with a goal by sophomore Esteban Angel of Guayaquil, Ecuador, off an assist by McInnis.
Files (1-0) picked up a win in his first collegiate start and made two saves against 14 shots by the Celts. UST keeper Jason Taffet made six saves against 16 Badger shots.
Spring Hill (3-0) will next host Mississippi College (1-0) in a non-conference match on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. on Library Field.
