MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College volleyball team upset No. 25 Freed-Hardeman University by a 3-0 score and then took a 3-1 loss to Lindsey Wilson College at the opening day of the annual Faulkner University Invitational Tournament on Friday.
In the afternoon match against Freed-Hardeman, junior Sha Sha Buchanan from Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High School and freshman Ginny Hicks of Salt Lake City, Utah, each tallied 13 kills while junior setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., and sophomore Sami Maurer of St. Louis, Mo., each collected 13 digs.
Nash also handed out 38 assists against the Lions (1-2) as the Badgers won 25-14, 25-20, 25-13.
At the evening match versus Lindsey Wilson (4-6), the Badgers claimed the first set 25-22, but LWC stormed back to win the final three sets 25-22, 25-19, 25-17. Buchanan and Hicks each had 12 kills while Maurer pulled in 10 digs. Freshman Taylor Lahasky of New Iberia, La., added 12 digs to the SHC totals.
The Badgers (7-2) will remain in Montgomery on Saturday to face Webber International University (2-0) at 1 p.m. and Martin Methodist College (1-3) at 5 p.m.
