CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College men's soccer team opened the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) portion of their schedule with a 3-2 win at Lee University on Friday afternoon.
The Flames (3-3-1, 0-1 SSAC) opened the scoring the in 9th minute of play when Sias Reyneke ripped a 5-yard left-to-right shot past SHC freshman goalkeeper Jacob Files of Clinton, Miss., following a good entry pass by Sebastian Vallejo off a second assist by Jonathan Perelman.
Spring Hill answered back with a tying score in the 25th minute when freshman Arturo Garcia of Guayaquil, Ecuador, blasted a straight-on goal from the top of the keeper's box with an assist by freshman Jose Scheuren from Miami, Fla.
The Badgers took a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute when sophomore Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., sliced through the defense and found the back of the net with a 16-yard shot following the pass by Garcia.
Lee responded in the 68th minute when Josh Ball scored off a corner kick by Chevon Roberts to knot the score at 2-2, but the Badgers would not be denied as 70 seconds later Hartlage knocked in the game winner off an assist by junior Nick Link of Elizabethtown, Ky., who took a free kick near midfield.
Files improve to 3-2 in-goal on the year and made four saves against 17 shots by the Flames. Lee goalkeeper Tom Halsall (3-3-1) completed one save against nine Badger shots.
Spring Hill (6-2, 1-0 SSAC) will now travel to Marietta, Ga., to face the 7th-ranked Runnin' Hornets of Southern Polytechnic State University (5-1, 1-0 SSAC) in a conference match on Saturday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
