The Spring Hill College men's soccer team took a hard-fought 1-0 conference victory over the Truett-McConnell College Bears on Friday evening at Library Field.
The Badgers and the Bears (3-3-1, 0-2-1 SSAC) battled to a scoreless draw at halftime and the score remained deadlocked until the 51st minute when the TMC defense was whistled for a handball foul inside the goalkeeper's box and SHC junior Nick Link of Elizabethtown, Ky., buried the resulting penalty kick to make it a 1-0 advantage for the home team.
On the other end of the field, freshman Badger goalkeeper Jacob Files of Clinton, Miss., came through with his own heroics when with less than one minute remaining in the match he stopped a penalty kick by the Bears' Nils Conway and then kept his focus long enough to stop the following rebound shot attempt by Josh Moffet of TMC.
Files made 11 saves versus 22 TMC shots in the shutout victory while his counterpart Crag Stephenson of the Bears made three saves against 13 SHC shots.
Spring Hill (7-3, 2-1 SSAC) will next host conference foe Southern Wesleyan University (7-1, 2-1 SSAC) from Central, S.C., on Saturday at 4 p.m. on Library Field.
