HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College women's soccer team lost a conference road match by the score of 5-2 at 7th-ranked William Carey University on Wednesday evening.
The Crusaders (9-2-1, 4-1 SSAC) opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the match with a tally kicked in by Tori McDevitt from 7-yards out facing the goal off an assist by Kristen Satcher.
McDevitt later assisted on the second Carey goal that was scored off a header by Jeana Gilbert in the 13th minute of play from the top of the 6-yard box. McDevitt would also tack on a third goal for the Crusaders in the 28th minute from 10 yards out.
The Badgers broke on to the board in the 35th minute when sophomore Erin Claxton of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, punched in a goal from 11 yards out to make it a 3-1 contest at the intermission.
Malin Barruff made it 4-1 for Carey off an assist by Satcher in the 62nd minute and then teamed up on another McDevitt mark just two minutes later to build a 5-1 advantage for the home team.
Spring Hill scored on its only shot of the 2nd half when redshirt freshman Courtney Harlan of Mobile found the net from 10 yards out with an assist from Claxton in the 98th minute.
Freshman Badger goalkeeper Maggie Dalessio of St. Augustine, Fla., fell to 1-6 on the season with the loss and made eight saves against 22 shots by the Crusaders. On the opposite end of the field, Linfa Jones made two saves against seven Badger shots.
Spring Hill (4-7, 1-4 SSAC) will host a conference match with Belhaven University (4-7, 2-2 SSAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Library Field.
