The Spring Hill College men's soccer team upset the 4th-ranked and previously undefeated Belhaven University Blazers in a 2-1 SSAC stunner at Library Field on Saturday.
The Badgers opened the match with haymaker blow in the 4th minute when sophomore Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., ripped the net for a score following a pass from just outside the top of the keeper's box by freshman Arturo Garcia of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Belhaven (12-1, 5-1 SSAC), however, answered back in the 7th minute with a one-on-one goal by Will Monsour past SHC freshman goalkeeper Jacob Files of Clinton, Miss., after an assist by the Blazers' Guilherme Sousa.
Spring Hill retook the lead in the 37th minute when freshman Andrew McInnis of Mandeville, La., scored from a distance of eight yards on the right side via a beautiful entry pass by sophomore Esteban Angel of Guayaquil.
From there, the defenses of both squads took control of the match and the 2nd half would prove to be a physical defensive battle with the Badgers holding on for the win.
Files (5-5) made five saves against 22 Blazer shots for the win while on the other side of the field Carl Blundell faced 14 Badger shots and collected two saves.
Belhaven attempted seven corner kicks and limited SHC to four tries from the edges. The Blazers also accumulated 19 fouls to just nine for Spring Hill.
Spring Hill (8-5, 3-3 SSAC) will travel to Mount Vernon, Ga., on Thursday to face Brewton-Parker College (3-8-1, 0-5 SSAC) in a conference match beginning at 2:30 p.m.
