MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Facing a do-or-die situation, the Spring Hill College women's soccer team kept their postseason aspirations alive with a 4-1 conference victory over Faulkner University on Thursday evening at John Mark Stallings Field.
Spring Hill College opened the scoring in the 16th minute of play when redshirt freshman Courtney Harlan from Mobile, Ala., scored off an entry pass from freshman Hannah Michael of New Orleans, La.
The Lady Eagles (6-10-1, 4-5-1 SSAC) answered with a tying goal in the 23rd minute, but the Badgers remained focused and were awarded a penalty kick attempt in the 34th minute after a foul to Michael in front of the goal. Sophomore Erin Claxton of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was stopped on her initial kick attempt, but smartly followed her shot and knocked in the rebound to give SHC a 2-1 advantage.
The Badgers nailed down the crucial victory when Claxton lifted through balls into freshman Amanda Allen of New Orleans in the 53rd minute and Harlan in the 54th minute both of whom successfully found the back of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Massengale of New Orleans moved to 5-1-1 on the year with the win in goal.
Spring Hill (6-9-1, 3-6-1 SSAC) will host the 4th-ranked University of Mobile Lady Rams (13-3-1, 9-1 SSAC) at Library Field on Saturday in a 1 p.m. conference match to wrap up the 2012 regular season for both squads. The Badgers will need a win against Mobile or a loss by Truett-McConnell College (7-9, 3-7 SSAC) to Brewton-Parker College (0-16-1, 0-10 SSAC) for SHC to secure the final available spot in the 2012 SSAC Tournament.
