The Spring Hill College men's soccer team wrapped up the 2012 regular season with a 3-1 loss to the 9th-ranked University of Mobile Rams on Saturday evening at Library Field.
Mobile (13-3-1, 9-2 SSAC) opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Gunnar Steindorsson blasted a shot from 20 yards out that caught the shoulder of SHC sophomore defender Nick Smith of Huntsville, Ala., and deflected into the upper left corner of the goal.
Spring Hill College responded with a tying goal in the 35th minute when sophomore Salvador Sanchis of Miami, Fla., knocked in a goal from two yards out off a right-to-left pass across the face of the goal from freshman Arturo Garcia of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The flood gates opened two minutes later for Mobile when Gaetan Massiah cleaned up a shot originally saved by SHC goalkeeper freshman Jacob Files of Clinton, Miss., off the foot of Alvardo Pichardo. Then the Rams struck again one minute later when Massiah crossed a lovely waist-high pass into Sam Blackburn for the game's final goal.
Files made seven saves against 23 UM shots while Ram keeper Xavier Audergon made four saves against seven Badger shots. Mobile attempted eight corner kicks while SHC had three chances from the corners.
Spring Hill (10-7-1, 5-5-1 SSAC) will next play in the opening round of the 2012 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday versus the 5th-ranked Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks (13-3-2) at the AUM Soccer Complex in Montgomery beginning 1:30 p.m.
