The Spring Hill College men's golf team won the team championship of the annual University of Mobile Fall Invitational held at Heron Lakes Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
Finishing 1st of three teams, the SHC men shot scores of 308 and 307 for a +39 score of 615 in the two rounds over the 6807-yard and par 72 course. Mobile was eight strokes behind the Badgers (309, 314, 623) while Belhaven closed the event with scores of 319 and 310 for a 629 total.
Individually, Spring Hill's sophomore Adam Spiller of Mobile's Cottage Hill Christian Academy took the tournament's championship with a score of 152 (75, 77, +8) while fellow sophomore Jordan Portal of Miami, Fla., tied for 4th out of 28 total golfers with a +10 score of 154 (78, 76).
Seniors Nathan Ceille of Hales Corner, Wis., and Joseph Webster of Trussville, Ala., tied for 7th place with +12 scores of 156 (79, 77 and 76, 80 respectively).
Daniel McCrea rounded out the team score for the Badgers with a +14 score of 158 (81, 77).
Michael Hayes, Matt Mentesana, Cade Landeche, freshman Gerardo Portela of Miami and Trent Hayes carded a team score of 675 while unofficially participating as a JV squad.
Competing individually, junior Spencer Lane of St. Louis, Mo., came in in 2nd place with a 153 card (77, 76, +9) and tied with sophomore Robert Bo Cox of Gardendale, Ala. (79, 74, 153) Senior Scott Shields from Atlanta, Ga., was 7th (77, 79, 156), junior Philip Dugan of Lake Forrest, Ill., was 18th (81, 80, 161), senior Chris Cartmill of Chesterfield, Mo., was 20th (81, 83, 164), and junior Rickie Lee, Jr., of Bayou LaBatre, Ala., was 21st (82, 83, 165).
The event closed out the Badgers' fall half of the 2012-13 season and they will next take to the links in the upcoming spring semester.
