The Spring Hill College men's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 74-70 non-conference overtime loss to Fisk University on Friday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
The visiting Bulldogs (1-1) rallied from a 32-30 deficit at halftime to take a 4-point lead at 59-55 off a 3-point bucket by Jewaun Wynn with three minutes remaining. SHC, however, fought back to take a 63-62 lead off two free throws by junior Todd Martin of Mobile, Ala., at the one minute mark.
Brandyn Mungo of Fisk gave the Bulldogs the lead with a layup at 37 seconds on the clock only to see sophomore Frederick Gatson of Riverdale, Ga., answer with a layup on the other end to make it 65-64 in favor of the home team with 13 seconds showing.
Fisk's Darrell Miller made 1-of-2 free throws with seconds remaining to tie the game at 65 and a final 3-pointer from junior Robert Gipson of Mobile was off the mark at the horn to send the game into extra time.
Jacob Pope of Fisk came up with the heroics of the night as he drained a 3-point bucket to make it a 73-70 Bulldog lead with 30 seconds left. Martin would then miss a 3-pointer at the other end and Wynn tacked on an insurance free throw at seven seconds for the final 74-70 score.
Senior forward Brett Williams of Oviedo, Fla., scored a game-high 21 points for Spring Hill as Gatson added 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior Alex Looney of Mobile collected 13 points. As a team, SHC out-rebounded Fisk 42-34 and shot 45% (27-60) from the field including 20% (3-15) from behind the 3-point arc.
Fisk shot 39.3% (22-56) overall and 34.6% (9-26) in 3-point attempts as Miller led four Bulldogs in double-digits with 18 points.
Spring Hill College (0-1) will next host the 24th-ranked Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) Knights on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
