MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College volleyball team opened the pool-play round of the 2012 SSAC Championship Tournament with a 3-1 victory in the scores of 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-14 versus Loyola University (La.) on Thursday morning at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex Building.
In the opening set, the Loyola Wolfpack (26-8) trailed through the first 35 volleys until rallying for a 9-1 run that turned an 18-16 deficit into a 25-19 win.
From there, Spring Hill regained its composure and swept through the next three sets to take the 3-1 victory. Neither of the two teams could build more than a two-point lead in the 3rd set and the score was tied at 23-23 until a block by SHC juniors Sha Sha Buchanan and Taryn Nash was followed by Nash sending an assist to Buchanan for the set winning kill.
Buchanan led the Badgers with 18 kills, two solo blocks and five block assists while freshman Sami Hantak of St. Louis, Mo., and sophomore Megan Haber of Lillian, Ala., gathered 12 and 14 blocks respectively. Nash ended the day with 44 assists and junior Meredith Donald collected 19 digs with 20 receptions. Sophomore Sami Maurer added 17 digs and 30 receptions to the SHC totals.
As a team, Spring Hill built a .320 attack percentage (61-13-150) while Loyola was held to a .213 (58-23-164) percentage. Defensively, the Badgers totaled 13 blocks with 82 digs and 71 receptions while the Wolfpack tallied just one block with 76 digs and 89 receptions.
The Badgers (29-4) will continue pool-play in the 2012 SSAC Championship Tournament at 10 a.m. on Friday versus Brenau University (19-10) in the Cramton Bowl Multiplex Building.
