MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College volleyball team finished the pool-play round of the 2012 SSAC Championship Tournament with a 1-1 record following a 3-2 loss by the scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-27, 22-25, 13-15 versus Brenau University on Friday morning at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex Building.
Spring Hill took the 1st set in a 25-16 score after using a 10-1 run to break open an early 4-4 tie. The Golden Tigers (20-11) took an quick 3-1 lead in the 2nd set, but the Badgers responded by building out a 14-9 bulge and then holding off a Brenau rally that cut it to a 15-14 SHC advantage.
Brenau refused to quit, however, and took a 27-25 victory in the 3rd set after trailing by as much as 18-14 and won a point-for-point battle in the 4th set to tie the match at 2-2 with 25-22 win.
Spring Hill led 13-11 in the tie-breaking set, but Brenau ran off the final four points of the match for the 3-2 victory.
The Badgers were paced by junior middle hitter Sha Sha Buchanan who totaled 20 kills, three service aces and seven total blocks. Junior setter Taryn Nash distributed 57 assists while junior libero Meredith Donald pulled in 23 digs with 32 receptions. Sophomore defensive specialist Sami Maurer tallied 13 digs and 43 receptions. Freshman Sami Hantak slapped down 13 kills with freshman Ginny Hicks and sophomore Megan Haber each collecting 10 kills.
As a team, Spring Hill hit .251 (63-21-167) while Brenau earned a .293 attack percentage (78-24-184). The Badgers totaled 12 blocks as the Tigers had nine stops. SHC served up eight aces and Brenau hurt them themselves with 11 service errors.
Even with the loss, the Badgers (29-5) still clinched a bye to the tournament's semi-final round of bracket play at 11 a.m. on Saturday versus the College of Coastal Georgia.
