NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team wrapped up play at the 2012 Big Easy Classic hosted by Xavier University (La.) with a 94-87 loss to the Jarvis Christian College Bulldogs at the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
The hot-shooting Bulldogs (1-1) grabbed an early 10-2 advantage after making their first four shots of the game and built out as large as a 16-point lead at 44-28.
Spring Hill rallied back over the final five minutes of the half and sliced the Bulldog lead down to eight points for a 55-47 score at the break.
Coming out of the locker rooms, Jarvis rebuilt a double digit lead and maintained a comfortable 8- to 12-point advantage for the next eight minutes of play.
The Badgers trailed 80-66 with six minutes remaining when junior Todd Martin dropped in three unanswered 3-point buckets to make it an 80-75 game in just 70 seconds of game time.
The Bulldogs, however, would make enough of their free throws down the stretch to withstand the late Badger rally and take the 94-87 win.
Sophomore Frederick Gatson of Riverdale, Ga., had a breakout game for the Badgers going 10-of-13 from the floor for 24 points with a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.
For Jarvis, five Bulldogs cracked the double-digit mark led by Chris Davis with 24 points while Marcus O'Key tallied 10 rebounds and 15 points.
As a team, SHC shot 44.6% (29-65) from the field and 28.6% (6-21) from 3-point distance while Jarvis Christian was successful on a scalding 62% (31-50) of their shots including 61.9% (13-21) from behind the arc. The Badgers committed 10 turnovers against six steals by the Bulldogs and Jarvis turned the ball over 15 times under the pressure of 10 Badger steals.
Spring Hill College (0-4) will host Life University (1-2) at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Building.
