MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College volleyball team fought to the bitter end, but the 9th-ranked Lee University Lady Flames took a 3-2 victory in the championship match of the 2012 SSAC Championship Tournament by the scores of 30-32, 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12 on Saturday evening at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex Building.
The Badgers were led by junior middle hitter Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile who totaled 19 kills and junior setter Taryn Nash who passed out 54 assists with three service aces. Sophomore Megan Haber and freshman Ginny Hicks tallied 15 and 14 kills respectively. On defense, sophomore Sami Maurer had 16 digs and 38 receptions while junior Meredith Donald scooped up a team-high 23 digs and 36 receptions.
As a team, Spring Hill hit .201 (64-27-184) while Lee (28-9) earned a .323 attack percentage (81-20-189). The Badgers totaled seven blocks as the Flames had eight total blocks.
Lee's Nicole Sumida led five Lady Flames who reached double digits in kills with 18 as setter Camil Martinez distributed 60 assists.
By reaching the finals, the Badgers (30-6) secured a second consecutive automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Tournament and will face an opponent to be announced later this week in the Opening Round at a yet to be determined time and on-campus location this Saturday.
