The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost a tough SSAC cross-divisional battle with Emmanuel College by a final score of 59-73. Spring Hill trailed for most of the game, but consistently stayed within striking distance. The game was a tough, physical battle that saw 7 lead changes and 7 ties throughout the course of play.
The Badgers scored 6 straight point to close out the end of regulation play and send the game into the extra period. Todd Martin hit a jumper in the lane with just :18 seconds remaining on the clock. Emmanuel would call timeout to set up their last play by good defense by sophomore Frederick Gatson forced a turnover. The badgers were able to get off a final desperation 3 point shot after advancing the ball to half court, but it bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
In the overtime period, it was all Emmanuel as the Lions held the Badgers scoreless and held on for the 14 point victory.
Emmanuel had four players in double figures including a game high 25 from Isaiah Tyus. Also in double digits were Patrick McCrary (13), Michael Stanley (12), and Adrian Justice (11). Defensively, Michael Stanley paced the Lions by pulling down 15 rebounds. As a team, Emmanuel shot 47.1 from the floor and 36.4 from three point land.
For the Badgers, Todd Martin poured in a team high 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Mobile native Alex Looney also tossed in 11 as the only other Badger to reach double figures. Frederick Gatson led the rebounding charts for the Badgers with 7. The Badgers shot 37.7% from the floor overall and just 23.5% from behind the arc.
Spring Hill will try to regroup quickly and pick up their second win of the season when they host St. Thomas University on Tuesday, November 20th. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
