CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost a 90-52 decision to the 15th-ranked Lee University Flames in a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) cross-divisional road match on Saturday afternoon at Walker Arena.
The Flames (9-0, 4-0 SSAC East) opened a quick 8-2 lead three minutes into the contest, but the Badgers rallied to cut it to a 12-9 deficit with 12:30 left in the half.
A barrage of four 3-point buckets lifted Lee to a 21-11 advantage with 9½ minutes on the first half clock, but Badger guards Robert Gipson of Mobile and Ben Redman from Spanish Fort, Ala., dropped in treys of their own to bring Spring Hill back within 24-19 at the seven minute mark.
Lee answered the Badger rally with another four consecutive 3-point buckets to construct a 22-point 43-21 advantage for the home team with three minutes left until the intermission. The Flames would carry a 49-30 lead into the locker rooms after draining a staggering 12-of-20 (60%) 3-points shots in the first period.
Junior forward Alex Looney of Mobile scored 15 points and junior guard Todd Martin of Mobile added 11 points as Spring Hill shot 35.9% (19-53) overall from the field including 29.4% (5-17) in 3-point attempts. Under the boards, Lee out-muscled the Badgers for a 40-25 advantage in rebounding while the Spring Hill hurt themselves with 13 turnovers against seven steals by the Flames.
Duran Blue of the Flames had 25 points and enjoyed a 7-of-7 night in 3-point attempts as Lee shot 51.9 (28-54) overall and was a blistering 61.3% (19-31) in 3-points shooting.
Spring Hill College (1-9, 1-3 SSAC West) will next visit the 24th-ranked Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) Knights (3-1) for a non-conference contest at The Castle in New Orleans, La., at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
