NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Spring Hill College women's basketball team dropped a 68-43 decision to Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) in a non-conference match in The Castle on Saturday afternoon.
SUNO (4-1) held a slim 21-20 halftime lead, but clawed out a 30-24 advantage with 15:30 left in the game. The Lady Knights then used a their defense to force the Badgers into turnovers that resulted in several uncontested fast break baskets as SUNO assumed a commanding 63-39 bulge with five minutes to play.
Senior center April Bradford of Pensacola, Fla., paced SHC with 11 points while junior forward Sha Sha Buchanan from Mobile, Ala., added 10 points and senior forward Kristin Rogers of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., pulled down eight of the 48 Badger rebounds.
Spring Hill shot 28.3% (17-60) and were 2-of-10 (20%) from 3-point range, but handed the ball to SUNO 32 times on turnovers against 16 steals by the Lady Knights.
SUNO's Alisha Drayton and Janee Morton each scored 16 points with Drayton collecting nine rebounds and Morton hauling down eight boards. The Lady Knights shot 36.4% (28-77) overall and made 16.7% (3-18) of their 3-point attempts. SUNO turned the ball over 16 times in the face of just three Badger steals.
The Badgers (3-7) will host SUNO in a return match on Saturday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
