The Spring Hill College women's basketball team lost to the Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) Lady Knights for the second time in seven days as the Badgers dropped a non-conference match by the score of 65-62 at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Knights held a slim 38-33 advantage at the intermission after leading by as much as 15 in the 1st half, but quickly rebuilt a 10-point lead at 47-37 with 15 minutes to play.
Spring Hill's defense and foul shooting cut the SUNO bulge down to just one point at 63-62 at the 1:20 mark following four consecutive free throws by sophomore point guard Elissa VandeWaa from Spanish Fort, Ala., and junior guard Jamesha Watkins of York, Ala.
April Perry of SUNO, however, connected on a layup with 17 seconds left to make it 65-62 and a final game-tying 3-point attempt by Watkins was off the front of the rim as time expired.
Watkins scored 14 points for the home team while senior center April Bradford from Pensacola, Fla., led Spring Hill with 10 rebounds. The Badgers shot 33.8% (22-65) from the field and were only 8.3% (1-12) from 3-point territory. SUNO's defense took away 12 steals and created 18 total SHC turnovers, but the Badgers won the rebounding war 45-44.
SUNO (5-1) was paced by Perry with 19 points and Sharlyn Reed with 10 rebounds. The Lady Knights shot 42.9% (27-63) from the field and were 38.5% (5-13) from 3-point distance while suffering 22 turnovers against 11 Badger steals.
SUNO took a 68-43 decision over SHC last Saturday in New Orleans.
The Badgers (3-8) will host Dillard University (1-6) in a non-conference game on Monday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.
