The Spring Hill College men's basketball team saw a 39-35 halftime lead slip away in the 2nd half as the Tennessee Temple University Crusaders rallied to take a 71-65 non-conference win over the Badgers at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Wednesday night.
Consecutive 3-point baskets by TTU's Joe Quinn in the first two minutes of the 2nd half turned a 4-point Badger bulge into a 41-39 deficit, but Spring Hill later rallied to retake the lead off a basket by sophomore guard Robert Drummond from Fairhope, Ala., to stake the Badgers to a 55-53 advantage with 7 minutes left on the clock.
Two minutes later a bucket by Travaris Clarke of TTU gave the Crusaders back a lead they would not relinquish at 59-58.
Despite trailing by four points on four occasions over the last minute and half of the game, the Badgers cut the Crusader lead down to two points on three occasions, but could not find the defensive stops on the other end of the court as TTU used free throws down the stretch to take the 71-65 win.
Junior forward Alex Looney out of Mobile's Murphy High School and freshman guard Jackson Fos from Abita Springs, La., each dropped in 12 points for Spring Hill while junior guard Todd Martin from St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile added 11 points and Drummond reached double-figure scoring with 10 points.
Spring Hill shot 41.2% (21-51) as a team from the field and was 36.4% (8-22) from 3-point distance. SHC lost 13 turnovers against five TTU steals.
The Crusaders (8-5) were led by Quinn with 15 points, Weedlens Beauvil with 14 points and Hampton Mack with 12 points. As a team, TTU shot 44% (22-50) from the field and 40% (10-25) from 3-point range while turning the ball over 11 times against five Badger steals. The Crusaders also took down 32 rebounds as SHC tallied 30 total boards on the night.
Spring Hill (2-13) will next visit Baton Rouge, La. for an exhibition contest with NCAA Division 1 foe the Southern University Jaguars (4-6) at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, December 28.
