HAMMOND, La. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost a 71-61 exhibition decision to NCAA Division 1 opponent Southeastern Louisiana University on Saturday evening at the University Center.
Consecutive 3-point buckets by junior guard Robert Gipson of Mobile, Ala., gave SHC a 24-18 lead at the 6:35 mark of the first half, but the Lions (2-8) rallied late to wrestle back a slim 30-29 advantage at the intermission.
Spring Hill took a brief 34-33 lead off two free throws by junior center Andre Gowins of Gautier, Miss., just a minute and a half into the 2nd half, but Southeastern launched an 11-2 run over the next five minutes that put the Badgers in a 44-36 deficit.
The Badgers once again fought back to claim a 45-45 tie off a jumper by sophomore forward Frederick Gatson at 11:37 and a 50-50 deadlock at 8:49 following a 3-pointer by freshman point guard Jackson Fos of Abita Springs, La.
A crucial 7-point run by the Lions over the next four minutes, however, but SHC into a late 57-50 hole from which they could not climb out as the Lions converted enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the upstart Badgers.
SHC was paced by junior guard Robert Gipson of Mobile, Ala., with 23 points. The Badgers shot 35% (21-60) from the floor and 31.3% (10-32) in 3-point attempts. Spring Hill committed 11 turnovers against six steals by the Lions and was out-rebounded by a 45-36 margin.
Roosevelt Johnson scored 21 points and 18 rebounds for the home team as the Lions shot 43.9% (25-57) and 35.3% (6-17) from 3-point distance. The Lions suffered 10 turnovers against two Badger steals.
The Badgers (2-13, 1-3 SSAC West) will next host Southern Wesleyan University (5-5, 1-3 SSAC East) in a cross-divisional conference match at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
