JACKSON, Miss. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team took a 90-69 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) West Division loss at the hands of the Belhaven University Blazers at Rugg Arena on Thursday night.
The Blazers (8-10, 5-2 SSAC West) raced out to a 45-34 halftime lead as Belhaven shot a scorching 11-of-19 (58%) in 3-pointers over the game's first 20 minutes.
Spring Hill fell down by 21 points with 12 minutes left in the game, but cut it down to a 14-point bulge just one minute later. At the 5:47 mark a 3-point bucket by junior guard Todd Martin made it a 9-point game at 71-62 as the Badgers stormed back for a late rally.
Wade Scioneaux of Belhaven stopped the Badgers cold, however, with a 3-point basket from the top of the arc at 3:03 and a steal on the other end just 20 seconds later.
Sophomore Badger guard Robert Drummond of Fairhope, Ala., contributed a career-high 21 points and junior forward Alex Looney of Mobile's Murphy High School scored 16 points while junior guard Robert Gipson dropped in 14 points.
Spring Hill shot 37.5% (21-56) from the field and was 20% (5-25) from 3-point land, but hurt itself with 17 turnovers against nine steals by Belhaven. SHC won the battle under the boards with a 42-40 rebounding margin.
Jordan Butts scored a game-high 30 points for Belhaven while Jerrial Dawson added another 23 points for the Blazers. Datodrick Pinkston had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the home team while Chris Cofield collected 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Belhaven was 47.5% (28-59) in shooting overall and 57.1% (16-28) in 3-point attempts. The Badgers took the away with six steals and forced the Blazers into 14 turnovers.
Spring Hill (3-15, 2-5 SSAC West) will host 6th-ranked William Carey University (14-2, 7-0 SSAC West) on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
