The Spring Hill College women's basketball team lost a divisional contest by a 61-51 score at the University of Mobile Lady Rams in H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium on Thursday evening.

Both teams looked to run the floor early with SHC taking a 10-4 lead after four minutes of play as the Lady Rams (12-10, 7-5 SSAC West) shot just 20% (3-15) to start the game. By the 12:10 mark, the Badgers had built a 16-7 advantage and continued to hold an 18-11 bulge at 9:30.

For the final 10 minutes of the 1st half, both teams fell into half-court styles of play, but both offenses also continued to struggle until Mobile knocked down back-to-back treys followed by a fast break layup that made it a 24-23 Badger lead with 58 seconds left in the period. A third 3-pointer by Mobile's Courtney Bayliss with just 4 seconds remaining sent the game into the half tied at 26-26.

Mobile took their first lead of the game 45 seconds into the 2nd half off two free throws by Deonica McCormick, but neither team would score for another three minutes when Mobile took a 30-26 lead with a put-back bucket by McCormick. The Rams opened up a 35-26 margin at 14:53 with 1-of-2 free throws by Lauren Bethly.

Spring Hill was held scoreless for 5½ minutes to open the final period until freshman guard Natalie Harper drained a 3-pointer from the left side and junior forward Sha Sha Buchanan sank two from the charity line at 13:38 to put the Badgers back in the game at 35-31.

Harper's 3-pointer at 12 minutes left brought SHC within 37-36 and a nifty inside move by junior forward Twarner Witherspoon resulted in a go-ahead layup at 38-37 with 11:22 to play.

A breakaway layup by the Rams' Briana Edwards swapped the lead again as Mobile made it 43-42 with eight minutes to go, but Buchanan's put-back of a missed Badger free throw at 5:02 sent SHC back up 45-44.

McCormick drew the hoop and the harm for a 3-point play at 3:47 as Mobile took a 49-45 lead that grew to 52-47 just 90 seconds later and McCormick's half-court steal and layup with two minutes showing on the clock put SHC into a 54-48 deficit.

Mobile would salt the game away with 6-of-9 free throws as the Badgers missed their final five 3-point attempts for a 61-51 final.

Buchanan topped the Badger scorers with 13 points while McCormick dropped in 20 for Mobile. Spring Hill freshman center Leah Washington led all rebounders with 12 boards.

Spring Hill shot a combined 28.3% (17-60) from the field including just 15% (3-20) from 3-point range. Mobile was 30.1 % (22-73) overall and 27.3% (3-11) in 3-point shooting. The Badgers controlled the rebounding battle 55 to 47, but turned the ball over 23 times against 10 steals by the Rams. Mobile lost the ball just 11 times versus only four SHC steals.

The Badgers (9-13, 5-7 SSAC West) will next host the Belhaven University Lady Blazers (9-13, 6-6 SSAC West) in a conference tilt beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
