The Spring Hill College men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday evening by winning 80-68 over the Belhaven University Blazers at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Belhaven (9-16, 5-8 SSAC West) took a quick six-point lead just four minutes into the game at 9-3, but from there on out the Badgers grabbed control and refused to let go. By halftime, Spring Hill held a 34-22 advantage and had the game's momentum thoroughly in their corner.
The 2nd half was more the same as Spring Hill raced out to a 50-22 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining and the Blazers would get no closer than 10 points at 70-60 with 2 minutes remaining. The Badgers would drop in 10-of-13 free throws over the final 1:50 to take the 80-68 victory.
SHC junior Robert Gipson led all scorers and rebounders with 27 points and 11 boards for his second double-double night of the season. Freshman Wesley Pietri came off the bench and added his personal season-high of 14 points to Badger totals.
Spring Hill shot 44.9% (22-49) overall and were an impressive 50% (14-28) in 3-point shooting. The Badger won the rebounding battle 43-38, but suffered 21 turnovers against a tough Blazer defense that took away 13 steals.
The Blazers had four players reach double digit scoring as Chris Cofield and Datodrick Pinkston each had 17 points. Belhaven shot 34.4% (21-61) from the field and were just 16.7% (3-18) from long distance. Spring Hill took away four steals as Belhaven lost just 13 turnovers.
Spring Hill (4-20, 3-10 SSAC West) will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Thursday to face 18th-ranked William Carey University (18-4, 11-2 SSAC West) in a divisional game beginning at 7:30 p.m.
