HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College women's basketball team held off a determined William Carey University Lady Crusaders team for a 57-54 conference victory on Thursday evening.

The Lady Crusaders (7-15, 3-11 SSAC West) took an early 7-0 lead, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Badger freshman guard Armanee' Broussard put SHC up 15-9 with 6:50 to play in the 1st half. By halftime the Badgers held a 32-20 advantage as the Spring Hill ladies were shooting a healthy 52.2% (12-23) from both inside and outside.

Spring Hill continued to hold the Lady Crusaders at arm's length with a 9- to 13-point cushion for the first 14 minutes of the 2nd half, as Badger senior center April Bradford hit nine of her first 10 shots and was dominating the paint on both ends of the court and SHC clung to a 47-37 lead.

Carey then cut it down to a 47-39 advantage for Spring Hill off two free throws by Tisa Smith with 5:19 to play and the Crusaders' Vechatita Bonner made it a 49-42 game with a 3-point bucket at 4:56.

A steal and fast break layup by Carey's Erica Moore left SHC hanging by a slim 49-44 margin as the Crusaders looked to pull off a late rally, but Spring Hill's sophomore point guard Bethany Collins broke the Carey press with a pass from junior guard Jamesha Watkins for a layup at 3:39 to put SHC back up 51-44.

Four consecutive free throws by WCU's Ashton Scarborough and Jessica Hayes sliced the Badger lead down to 53-48 with 1:24 to play and Moore was good on a jumper in the paint as the Badgers suddenly found themselves up by just four points at 54-50 with 50 seconds on the clock. Smith sank two free throws at 43 seconds to make it 54-52 as Spring Hill struggled to make 2-of-6 in free throws before Collins drained two at 35 seconds to keep SHC up at 56-52

Smith connected on a layup at 26 seconds, but Collins made 1-of-2 on the other end to make it 57-54 with 15 seconds remaining as Bonner and Moore each missed game-tying 3-point baskets at 8 and 3 seconds remaining.

Bradford led SHC with 18 points as Collins added 10 points as the Badgers shot 43.9% (18-41) from the floor including a 37.5% (3-8) effort from long distance. Spring Hill collected 33 rebounds but suffered 22 turnovers against just six steals by Carey.

Moore and Crystal Tucker scored nine points apiece to pace Carey who shot 32.7% (18-55) overall and 21.4% (6-28) from 3-point distance. The Lady Crusaders turned the ball over 23 times against 10 Badger steals and pulled down 38 rebounds.

The Badgers (11-13, 7-7 SSAC West) will host the Loyola University (La.) Wolf Pack (9-13, 6-8 SSAC West) on Saturday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center beginning at 2 p.m.
