HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost to 19th-ranked William Carey University 82-73 on Thursday night at Clinton Gymnasium.
The Badgers refused to be intimidated by the Crusaders (19-4, 12-2 SSAC West) and held an early 18-12 lead with 11:38 to play in the 1st half and maintained a 26-23 advantage with 4:06 left in the period. A 7-0 run by Carey over the next minute-and-a-half, however, put Spring Hill in a 30-26 hole with 2:32 on the 1st half clock.
Going into the 2nd half the Badgers trialed 34-30 and the visitors continued to hang with the Crusaders as SHC trailed by just 49-44 with 12:43 to play. A 7-4 run by SHC brought the Badgers to within 53-51 at the 9:50 mark, but Carey responded with a 5-point outburst to go back up 58-51 with 9:17 on the clock.
Freshman guard Jackson Fos drained a 3-pointer and added the foul shot to cut the deficit to 58-55, but by the 3:27 mark Carey had grabbed a 69-58 lead as the Badgers could not find enough late magic to pull off the upset.
Fos scored a season-high 24 points as junior forward Alex Looney put in 11 points and junior guard Robert Gipson added 10 points for the Badgers who shot 33.3% (19-57) overall and 33.3% (8-24) from 3-point land. Spring Hill lost 21 turnovers and pulled in 24 rebounds.
For Carey, Daron Bell and Kelvin Nixon each tallied 21 points and Guy Payne collected 12 rebounds with 10 points. The Crusaders shot a healthy 40.9% (27-66) from the field, but completed only 17.6% (3-17) of their 3-point attempts. WCU lost 15 turnovers and took away 48 rebounds on the night.
Spring Hill (4-21, 3-11 SSAC West) will host Jesuit rival the Loyola University (La.) Wolf Pack (13-11, 7-7 SSAC West) on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
