MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost a conference contest at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks by a score of 72-63 on Thursday night at the AUM Gymnasium.
AUM (10-12, 8-7 SSAC West) built out a 12-point cushion at 21-9 with 8:14 to play in the 1st half, but the Badgers rallied to slice the deficit down to 25-20 at 4:50.
The Badgers trailed 31-24 entering the 2nd half, but junior guard Todd Martin dropped in two consecutive 3-pointers to open the period and make it a 33-30 game just 90 seconds into the final 20 minutes of play. Spring Hill took a 45-44 lead off a 3-pointer by freshman Ben Redman at 13:15.
A 3-pointer by Martin and two layups by sophomore forward Frederick Gatson gave SHC a 52-47 advantage with 10 minutes remaining on the game clock. AUM stormed back with a 12-0 run over the next 5 minutes to take a 61-52 lead before Martin stopped the bleeding with his fourth 3-pointer of the night.
Gatson completed a layup at 1:56 to make it a 61-59 AUM lead, but Quay Davis of AUM rained in a 3-pointer at 1:26 to grow the Warhawk lead back out to 64-59. Junior Badger guard Robert Gipson's layup at 24 seconds made it a 64-61 game, but Davis would answer with both ends of a 1-and-1 foul on the other end of the court with 21.1 seconds left. AUM would hold off the Badgers by making their final seven free throws.
Junior forward Alex Looney paced SHC with 16 points while Martin poured in 14 points and Gatson contributed 10 points. Reshad Bickham and Justin Zachary of AUM led all scorers with 18 points apiece for the Warhawks.
Both teams shot the ball well as Spring Hill ended the night at 42.4% (25-59) overall including 24% (6-25) from behind the 3-point line and AUM shot 52.9% (27-51) from the floor with a 53.8% (7-13) effort from long distance.
Spring Hill lost 17 turnovers to six steals for the Warhawks while AUM suffered 21 turnovers to eight Badger takeaways. AUM also won the battle under the boards with a 33-28 edge in rebounding.
Spring Hill (4-23, 3-13 SSAC West) will next travel to 9th-ranked Faulkner University Eagles (23-4, 13-2 SSAC West) on Thursday beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Montgomery.
