The Spring Hill College women's basketball team defeated the Voorhees College Tigers in a non-conference game by the score of 64-58 on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Spring Hill led the Tigers (13-14) 30-21 at the half and built as much as a 12-point advantage in the 2nd half at 43-31 with 14:41 to play.
Voorhees rallied to cut it down to a 55-52 SHC lead with three minutes to play, but the Badgers were 7-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to fend off the Tiger charge.
Spring Hill was led by freshman guard Natalie Harper who scored 21 points off seven 3-point baskets and junior forward Sha Sha Buchanan who put 13 points in the baskets. Junior guard Jamesha Watkins added 11 points while sophomore point guard Elissa VandeWaa handed out 11 assists. Overall, SHC shot 37.5% (21-56) including 33.3% (10-30) in 3-point attempts. The Badgers lost 24 turnovers to 18 steals by the Tigers, but out-rebounded Voorhees by a 45 to 39 margin.
Lauren Green paced Voorhees with 15 points while three other Tigers reached 10 points apiece. Voorhees shot 35.9% (23-64) from the floor with a 20% (2-10) success rate from long distance. The Tigers suffered 13 turnovers against eight SHC steals.
The Badgers (12-15, 7-9 SSAC West) will next visit 16th-ranked Faulkner University (23-5, 13-3 SSAC West) in a conference game on Thursday in Montgomery at 5:30 p.m.
