MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College women's basketball team lost a conference game to the 19th-ranked Faulkner University Lady Eagles by an 86-64 score on Thursday evening at Tine W. Davis Gymnasium.
Faulkner (24-5, 14-3 SSAC West) and Spring Hill battled to a 15-15 tie for the first 10 minutes of play, but Faulkner then launched a 13-to-4 run spurred by senior center Brittney Carter on the inside to take a 28-19 lead with seven minutes remaining in the half.
The Badgers responded with their own 8-1 run to fill the hole down to a 36-29 FU advantage at the 3:08 mark and just 40-36 at the break.
An interior bucket by junior Badger forward Sha Sha Buchanan cut it a 40-38 Eagle lead just 40 seconds into the 2nd half, but the Lady Eagles regrouped to stretch out a 65-47 cushion at the 10-minute mark and 72-51 bulge with 7 minutes on the clock.
Spring Hill was paced by Buchanan with 19 points and 15 rebounds while freshman guard Natalie Harper scored 10 points. Badger shooters were 37.5% (21-56) overall including 27.3% (6-22) in 3-point attempts. The SHC ladies lost 28 turnovers to 13 FU steals, but out-rebounded Faulkner 32-31.
For the Lady Eagles, Carter notched a career-high 36 points and 15 rebounds as Faulkner was 45.2% (33-73) from the floor overall including 28.6% (4-14) from 3-point territory. FU lost just 15 turnovers on the night to seven SHC steals. Nyla Johnson tacked on 13 points and Shannon Evans contributed 10 points to the Eagle cause.
The Badgers (12-16, 7-10 SSAC West) will wrap up the 2012-2013 regular season by hosting the University of Mobile Lady Rams (14-14, 8-9 SSAC West) at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center with the 10th and final spot in the 2013 SSAC Women's Basketball Tournament on the line for both teams.
