MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost a conference match at the 21st-ranked Faulkner University Eagles in a 74-60 score at Tine W. Davis Gymnasium on Thursday night.
Spring Hill knocked down three consecutive 3-point buckets to open the contest as the Badgers took a 9-0 lead before Faulkner (24-5, 14-3 SSAC West) answered with a fast break basket to make it 9-2 at 17:30.
The Eagles rebounded to tie the game at 21-21 with 8:23 to play and had built a 36-31 lead by the intermission.
In the opening minutes of the 2nd period, the Badgers and Eagles traded baskets with Faulkner holding a slim 37-35 advantage at the 15:31 mark following a free throw by junior Badger forward Alex Looney.
Faulkner took control of the game from that point on and built a 16-point bulge at 68-52 with four minutes to play.
Sophomore forward Frederick Gatson led SHC with 17 points and junior guard Robert Gipson put 11 points on the board. Maurice Whitely paced Faulkner with 13 points and Jake Mitchell and Di'mar Hill each contributed 10 points to the home team's totals.
Spring Hill shot 39.6% (19-48) overall including 26.1% (6-23) from behind the 3-point line and Faulkner was 46% (29-63) from the floor with a 26.3% (5-19) effort from long distance.
Spring Hill lost 18 turnovers to 12 steals for the Eagles while Faulkner suffered 15 turnovers to just three Badger takeaways. Faulkner also won the rebounding war with a 37-29 margin.
Spring Hill (4-24, 3-14 SSAC West) will close out the 2012-2013 season on Saturday night versus the University of Mobile Rams (14-13, 7-10 SSAC West) beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
