Sydney Finch of Mandeville, La., a member of the Archbishop Hannan High School Lady Hawks' two-time Class 1A state softball championship team at the catcher position, will attend Spring Hill College and play softball.
Finch helped lead the Lady Hawks to a 24-7 record en route to last year's crown, hitting .396 with four homers and 27 runs batted in ripping 11 doubles with two triples.
"Spring Hill was the last place I visited and I felt it was the best fit for me. I loved the team and I loved the coach. It just felt like a good match. I attended the Badger Day and I had a lot of fun. I wasn't too nervous during the tryout and I felt really comfortable," Finch said.
Finch also earned a 2012 State Powerlifting Championship and was defending her title over the weekend at press time. Finch also competed for the Lady Hawks' volleyball team.
"Softball has always been my sport since I was little. Being a catcher, powerlifting definitely helped me out with having strong legs. I have gotten so much stronger because of it," Finch added.
"We are all a family here at Hannan and that is what I will miss along with my teammates and friends."
Hannan coach Becky Lambert described Finch as a proven leader, who understands the game behind the plate and is an extremely hard worker.
"She is a tremendous defensive catcher and has a big responsibility behind the plate. I am going to miss her and Sydney is like one of my own kids. I've been around her since she was 11 and I have watched her grow not only as an athlete, but also as a wonderful person," Lambert said.
Spring Hill College coach Alison Sellers-Cook is in her ninth-year and was a centerfielder in her playing days.
"When Sydney came in for a visit she was just phenomenal. She is a quality kid that I wanted for our program on and off the field. She will help us tremendously and is a heck of a catcher, but we may also use her at third base. She is a proven leader and she will help us develop our program," Sellers-Cook said.
Sellers-Cook said Finch has tremendous arm strength with a good bat and is a tremendous athlete.
Finch thanked all of her coaches and her supportive family, who have helped get her to where she is today. Sydney is the daughter of John and Maria Finch.
