HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College baseball team opened a 3-game Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) series with a 6-0 loss to William Carey University on Friday night.
The Crusaders (12-6, 6-1 SSAC) and the Badgers battled through four scoreless innings to open the contest as SHC starter Nick Schmiemeier (2-1) and Carey starter Jake Fabre (2-2) both looked strong in the early going.
Schmiemeier would blink first giving up a run-scoring triple to Crusader shortstop Sean Hodges that was followed by a double to right-center that plated Hodges by 3rd baseman Mitch Bohon the bottom of the 5th inning. Two more Carey singles and a wild pitch would make it 4-0 headed to the 6th inning.
WCU added insurance run in the 6th inning when centerfielder Jeremy Ferguson led off with a triple and was later brought in by catcher Clint Ambrosch.
Schmiemeier took the loss in six innings with eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts while Fabre went eight innings with a walk and nine strikeouts.
Offensively, catcher Ryan Stevens had two hits for the Badgers while Bohon and right fielder Scott Fabre each had two hits for Carey.
The Badgers (7-7, 2-2 SSAC) will wrap up this series in a doubleheader with the Crusaders on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
