GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Spring Hill College softball team made a statement on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win over the 3rd-ranked Brenau University Golden Tigers and a 3-0 win over the Columbia College (Mo.) Cougars at the Gulf Coast Invitational Tournament.
In the opening contest against Brenau (12-3), freshman Caroline Sagrera struck out 12 batters with just one walk and two hits as the Badgers tallied eight hits on offense. Sophomore left fielder Shea Blanchard was 2-for-4 and scored both runs for the Badgers off singles by catcher Jade Bourgeois in the 1st inning and first baseman Elise deBruler in in the 3rd inning. Senior third baseman Mariha Partman also collected a hit for the SHC side.
In the second game versus Columbia (3-3), Badger senior starter Linsey Dickerson lasted two innings with two hits and two walks before Sagrera (9-0) returned to the circle to record seven more strikeouts in five innings with no hits and a walk. Partman was 2-for-3 in the nightcap while Bourgeois and deBruler each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior outfielder Katelyn Hinson added a hit with two walks for the Badgers
Spring Hill (14-2) will continue play in the Gulf Coast Invitational on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. versus 15th-ranked Lindsey Wilson College (13-0) followed by Cumberland University (12-5) at 11 a.m.
