GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Spring Hill College softball team defeated the Thomas University (Ga.) Night Hawks 5-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Gold Bracket at the Gulf Coast Invitational Tournament on Sunday morning and in a strange turn of events was named the tournament's co-champion.
Badger freshman starter Caroline Sagrera (11-0) had 11 strikeouts with just three hits allowed and two walks.
Spring Hall and Thomas (10-9) were knotted at two runs apiece headed into the 7th inning, but sophomore catcher Jade Bourgeois unleashed a bases-loaded 2-RBI single to break the tie that was then followed by another run-scoring single off the bat of sophomore first baseman Elise deBruler.
Following the match with the Night Hawks, tournament officials declared Spring Hill, AUM, Lee University and Faulkner University co-championships due to the fact that all four teams are members of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) and will meet in regular season games at later dates this season.
Spring Hill (16-3) will now travel to Talladega on Tuesday to face the Talladega College Tornadoes (3-15) in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
