The Spring Hill College men's golf team posted a 303 combined score in the final round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championships held at the Azalea City Golf Course to finish in 2nd place out of five teams. Overall, the team shot a combined 605 over the two-day event, including an opening round 302. The University of Mobile finished 19 strokes ahead of the Badgers to take the 2007 conference crown (291, 295, 586, +10).
Senior Patrick Jenkins of Chandler, Ariz., led the Badgers by shooting a combined 148 (+4) for the tournament, including an even par 72 in the opening round and a +4 score of 76 on day two. Individually, Jenkins placed 4th out of the 32 golfers in the event. Nathan Rau (University of Mobile) took the individual title with a –2 score of 142 (68, 74).
Sophomore Will Loweth of Houston, Tex., shot a two-day score of 151 to finish 6th (+7) and senior David Lysaught of Denver, Co., came in with an 8-over 152 to tie for 7th position. Junior Dan Thouvenot of St. Louis, Mo., struggled to an 85 score on the final day to finish at +20 (164, 19th).
Freshman Javier Portal of Miami, Fla., finished 10th with a total score of 153 (+9) while sophomore Sean Bockerstett of St. Louis and freshman Ricardo Escobar came in at 11th place with scores of 154 (+10). Freshmen Eddie Smith of San Antonio, Tex., (156, +12, 13th), Christopher Coleman of Mobile (159, +15, 16th) and Chris Angle from St. Louis (175, +31, 25th) each competed well in their first career conference championship event.
The Spring Hill men next play a match versus the University of Mobile on November 4-6 at the Azalea City Golf Club.
