HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Spring Hill College men's golf team saw its 12-stroke lead evaporate on the second day of the Carey Collegiate Classic as the University of Mobile rallied to nip the Badgers by four strokes at Canebrake Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Badgers shot a combined team score of 584 (284, 300, +16) over the par 71 course, but could not hold off the Rams who won the event with a team score of 580 (297, 283, +12).
Individually, sophomore Jordan Portal of Miami, Fla., carded rounds of 67 and 75 for an even score of 142 to carry home the tournament's individual crown while senior Scott Shields of Atlanta, Ga., tied for 5th place with scores of 71 and 75 (146, +4).
Senior Nathan Ceille of Hales Corner, Wis., was 7th with scores of 69 and 79 for a +6 total of 148, sophomore Robert Bo Cox of Gardendale, Ala., carded a +9 score of 151 (77, 74) for 13th place and senior Joseph Webster from Trussville, Ala., was 23rd out of the 43 golfers competing with a +15 score of 157 (81, 76).
Playing as individuals, junior Spencer Lane from St. Louis, Mo., was 9th (74, 76, 150, +8), junior Daniel McCrea (82, 72) of Belfast, Northern Ireland, tied for 17th place with a +12 total of 154, junior Philip Dugan of Lake Forest, Ill., was 26th (83, 78, 161, +19) and junior Rickie Lee of Bayou LaBatre, Ala., was 31st (85, 81, 166, +24).
Spring Hill will next shoot at the 2013 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championships at Lagoon Park Golf Club in Montgomery on April 14-17.
