CLEVELAND, Ga. – The Spring Hill College baseball team won a 6-4 decision at the Truett-McConnell College Bears on Sunday afternoon and won the three game SSAC series in the Peach State by a two-games-to-one margin.
Spring Hill took an early 1-0 lead over the Bears (6-25, 4-17 SSAC) the 1st inning when 2nd baseman Brian Sims beat out a throw home off a groundball to the drawn in infield by 3rd baseman Willie Floros.
Sims would score again in the 3rd inning via a double down the left field line by catcher Ryan Stevens to give SHC a 2-0 advantage. Stevens would later score on a steal of home to push the score to 3-0 in favor of the Badgers.
A triple by Sims in the top of the 5th inning brought in right fielder Jack Lauber and was followed by a single by Stevens to make it 5-0 for Spring Hill as Badger starter Keller Douglas (2-1) cruised through his first four innings scattering three hits by the Bears. Douglas would go five complete innings with four hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
SHC reliever gave up a bases-clearing double to TMC catcher Buck Harris in the 7th inning to cut it to a 5-3 Badger bulge, but used two pop outs and a grounder to 2nd base to escape the jam. Badger shortstop Brooks Bobinger would answer the challenge and stretch it back to a 6-3 score with a run-scoring double in the next half inning.
Closer Paul Sullivan earned his first save of season despite giving up a run-scoring double with two outs in the 9th inning.
Stevens collected three hits while Sims and designated hitter Rick LaForce each had a pair of hits in the contest.
The Badgers (14-24, 6-15 SSAC) host the Belhaven University Blazers (28-15, 13-8 SSAC) in a three-game conference series with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at historic Stan Galle Field.
