BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The 23rd-ranked Spring Hill College softball team swept a conference road doubleheader from the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 6-0 and 3-2.
Spring Hill used a five-run 5th inning to race past the Mariners (8-24-1, 4-14-1 SSAC East) 6-0 in Game One. Senior left fielder Katelyn Hinson blasted a Grand Slam in the outburst for her second homer of the season.
Hinson also provided the heroics in the second game by tying the game 2-2 in the top of the 6th inning with a full-count, bases-loaded, two-out single up the middle that brought in senior 3rd baseman Mariha Partman and sophomore catcher Jade Bourgeois. Partman then won the game in the 7th inning by driving a two-out single to center that plated second baseman Raleigh Downs from 3rd base.
Freshman Caroline Sagrera (23-3) won both ends of the twin bill by going the distance in the opener and coming in with one out in the 1st inning of the nightcap. In total, Sagrera struck out 22 batters on the day and allowed four hits with no walks.
Hinson's two hits with a homer and six RBI paced the Badgers while Bourgeois added four hits on the day. Right fielder Mindy Powel had a single in each game for the Mariners.
Spring Hill (31-9, 11-6 SSAC West) will wrap up this eight-game road swing at 2 p.m. on Sunday with an SSAC cross-divisional doubleheader at Brewton-Parker College (22-13, 10-6 SSAC East) in Mount Vernon, Ga.
