COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Spring Hill College softball team shutout 7th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) by a score of 3-0 in the second round of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championship Tournament at R.G. Jones Field on Friday afternoon.
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning when senior left fielder Katelyn Hinson lifted a sacrifice fly to left-center. SHC then worked their way out of a 2nd and 3rd with no-outs jam in the bottom of the frame to maintain the early advantage.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the 2nd inning when sophomore right fielder Shea Blanchard ripped a double to right-center with two outs.
After working out of the 1st inning situation, freshman pitcher Caroline Sagrera (30-6) cruised through the final six innings and allowed just three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Sophomore catcher Jade Bourgeois collected two hits at the plate including a double in the top of the 7th inning.
AUM (39-9) starter Kayla Hale (8-4) lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed four hits.
The 15th-ranked Badgers (40-12) will next continue play tonight in the winner's bracket versus No. 3 Lee University (42-9) at 6:30 p.m. e.s.t. at R.G. Jones Field.
