COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Spring Hill College softball team continued to roll play at the 2013 NAIA National Championship Tournament's Final Site with a convincing five inning 9-1 "Mercy Rule" victory over the 2nd-seeded Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps at R.G. Jones Field.
Spring Hill opened an early 2-0 lead on the Lady Chaps (58-9) in the bottom of the 1st inning when sophomore centerfielder Taylor Webre successfully executed a sacrifice squeeze bunt to bring in senior third baseman Mariha Partman and senior left fielder Katelyn Hinson followed with a solid single to left that plated sophomore catcher Jade Bourgeois.
In the 3rd inning, SHC starting pitcher Caroline Sagrera (37-9) allowed an RBI-single to catcher Latainna Eltsosie to make it a 2-1 contest, but otherwise the freshman cruised through the game with just three hits allowed, five walks and seven strikeouts.
The Badgers made it a 5-1 game in the 4th frame when Partman crushed a ball out of straight away centerfield for a three-run homer and her 12th dinger of the year.
SHC ended the game with a four-run bottom of the 5th inning capped by sophomore right fielder Shea Blanchard lifting a single to center that brought in junior 2nd baseman Raleigh Downs.
Katera Eltsosie (28-6) took the loss in 4.1 innings with seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
Downs contributed two hits and two RBI to Badger win while Hinson added two hits with a run-driven in.
Spring Hill (47-15) will next play the 6th-seeded Williams Baptist University Lady Eagles (45-7) on Monday at 7 p.m. EDT at R.G. Jones Field in the quarterfinal round.
