COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Spring Hill College softball team lost in the winners' bracket of the 2013 NAIA National Championship Tournament Final Site with a 1-0 downturn at the hands of the top-seeded Concordia University (Calif.) Eagles at R.G. Jones Field on Tuesday night.
The Eagles (51-3) touched SHC freshman pitcher Caroline Sagrera (38-10) for the game's only run in the top of the 1st inning when a walk and two stolen bases by Concordia right fielder Caitrin Debaun was followed by an RBI-single to center by second baseman Shainna Groom.
Groom was at the plate with two outs and a runner at 3rd base again in the 3rd inning, but this time Sagrera won the battle with a swinging strikeout.
Meanwhile, Concordia starter Katie Cotta (26-2) sat down seven consecutive Badgers to open the game before junior second baseman Raleigh Downs drew a walk with an out in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Sophomore catcher Jade Bourgeois ripped a double into left-centerfield in the bottom of the 4th, but was stranded on 2nd base after two SHC strikeouts.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Badgers put freshman pinch runner Julia Cieutat and Bourgeois at 1st base with two outs, but failed to score as a grounder to short to end the threat.
Sagrera finished the night allowing just three hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts in the loss while Cotta gave up just the one hit to Bourgeois to go along with three walks with seven strikeouts.
Spring Hill (48-16) will next play the winner of Lubbock Christian University (60-9) and Williams Baptist College (46-8) in an elimination game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. EDT at R.G. Jones Field with a bid to Thursday's National Championship games on the line.
