The Spring hill College women's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a hard-fought 2-1 exhibition match loss at NCAA Division 1 opponent University of South Alabama Jaguars on Thursday evening at The Cage.
The Jaguars scored first in the 23rd minute of play when Nini Rabsatt-Smith accepted a low crossing pass from the left side off the foot of Monique Autmon and drilled a goal into the right side of the goal.
SHC would then answer in the 40th minute as sophomore Hannah Michael from New Orleans, La., beat USA goalkeeper Sarah Hay with a tally that found the net at the far right post with an assist from sophomore Tatiana Gonzalez of Ocean Springs, Miss.
The Badgers would stand tough against their Old Shell Road neighbors led by goalkeepers junior Abby Massengale and sophomore Maggie Dalessio's outstanding efforts in goal. The Badger defensive unit stopped 13 shots on goal before finally buckling to a deciding penalty kick in 79th minute by Rabsatt-Smith.
USA outshot the Badgers 27-4 and took five corner opportunities to just two by SHC.
Spring Hill will begin the 2013 regular season on Saturday, August 24, with a home match at Library Field beginning at 11 a.m. versus the Texas College Steers.
