The Spring Hill College volleyball team opened the 2013 season with two non-conference home victories in the UMobile/SHC Invitational taking a 3-0 (25-8, 25-20, 25-22) win over Xavier University (La.) in the afternoon game and a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-20) decision over Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) in the nightcap at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Spring Hill controlled most of the action in the afternoon match versus the Gold Nuggets of Xavier (0-1) with junior outside hitter Megan Haber of Lillian, Ala., racking up m14 kills and three solos blocks. Senior setter Taryn Nash handed out 36 assists and pulled in 11 digs while senior libero Meredith Donald of Mobile also tallied 11 digs with 14 receptions.
Badger newcomer freshman outside hitter Molly Griffin of Westlake Village, Calif., recorded eight kills with 19 receptions and senior middle hitter Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile continued to be a force on defense with five total blocks.
For Xavier Chinedu Echebelem scored nine kills while setter Franziska Pirkl distributed 28 assists and Taylor Reuther collected 10 digs.
Next, the Badgers downed the SUNO Lady Knights (0-1) with Nash giving out 30 assists, Buchanan knocking down 12 kills and Donald collecting 19 digs.
In other tournament action on the SHC campus, Asbury defeated Southern Wesleyan 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 33-31) and Xavier downed Asbury in a 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 25-20) outcome.
On Saturday, the Badgers (2-0) will close out the tournament by hosting the Southeastern University (Fla.) Fire at 10 a.m. and the Eagles of Asbury University at 2 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
