The Spring Hill College women's soccer team opened the year with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Texas College Lady Steers at Library Field on Saturday afternoon.
SHC fell behind 1-0 early when Eva Rubio lifted a lob shot just under the crossbar of the south goal in the 9th minute of play, but responded with a game-tying goal in the 42nd minute when sophomore Courtney Harlan of Mobile found the net off an assist by sophomore Hannah Michael of New Orleans, La.
The 2nd half was an avalanche of goals by the Badgers as Harlan tallied the game-winner in the 47th minute following a nice combination of passing from freshman Darby Rasch of Madison, Ala., and junior Haley Funderburg from Pell City, Ala.
Harlan completed her hat-trick with a third goal in 62nd minute with an assist by Rasch. The Badgers would then add goals in the 70th, 71st, 78th and 87th minutes off the feet of freshman Jamie Townley of Pace, Fla., senior Molly Cowley of Jefferson City, Mo., junior Erin Brennan of St. Louis, Mo., and Rasch respectively.
SHC goalkeeper sophomore Maggie Dalessio of St. Petersburg, Fla., was the winner in goal with two saves after reliving junior Abby Massengale of New Orleans at halftime.
The Badgers outshot the Steers 31-3, including 17 shots on goal as Michelle De La Garza made 10 saves for Texas College. SHC took eight corner kicks while limiting the Steers to just three corner attempts.
The Badgers will wrap up the Classic on the Hill versus Wiley College (0-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Library Field.
