The Spring Hill College men's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 2-1 victory over non-conference foe Texas College on Saturday afternoon at Library Field in Day Two of the Classic on the Hill Tournament.
Spring Hill jumped out to 2-0 lead on the Steers (1-1) when junior forward Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., scored in the 4th and 7th minutes of play off assists by sophomore Andrew McInnis of Mandeville, La., and junior Salvador Sanchis from Miami, Fla.
From there, the badgers held off a spirited comeback attempt by the Steers as Angel Estrada halved the lead to 2-1 in the 50th minute.
SHC sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Files (1-0) of Clinton, Miss., made a crucial diving punch save to his right side with less than 10 minutes to play for one of his four saves against 12 Texas College shots.
SHC took 16 shots against Texas College keeper Gustavo Torres who recorded five saves on the day. The Badgers took eight corner opportunities and limited the Steers to just three corner attempts.
Spring Hill (1-0) will wrap up the Classic on the Hill on Sunday at 3 p.m. versus Wiley College (1-0) at Library Field.
