COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Spring Hill College volleyball team split results in a pair of non-conference matches on Friday at the opening day of the Hampton Inn Classic at The Arena of Southwell Complex on the campus of Columbia College. The Badgers dropped the afternoon match by a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-15) decision to No. 3 ranked University of Texas-Brownsville before rebounding to defeat Wiley College 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-7) in the nightcap.
The Badgers took the opening set in a hard-fought 25-23 outcome over UTB, but the Ocelots (1-0) rallied to win the next three sets for the win. Spring Hill's three senior class players led the way with libero Meredith Donald pulling in 17 digs, setter Taryn Nash distributing 43 assists, and middle hitter Sha Sha Buchanan recording 12 kills, two service aces and three blocks.
Other standout Badger performances in the first match included junior outside hitter Megan Haber with 10 kills and two blocks, sophomore defensive specialist Mallory Raulerson with five aces and freshman outside hitter Molly Griffin with 11 kills and six digs.
In the day's final match, SHC closed out a 25-18, 25-18, 25-7 victory over the Wiley Wildcats (0-2) with a 20-1 run as Haber scored 16 kills, Buchanan added nine kills and Nash gave away 33 assists with seven digs.
The Badgers (5-1) will remain in Columbia on Saturday for Day 2 of the Hampton Inn Classic beginning at 9 a.m. versus 24th-ranked Grand View University and wrapping up the tournament with a 5 p.m. match against Hastings College.
