FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Patrick Culotta found the back of the net in the 88th minute of play to break a 1-1 tie and give the Spring Hill College men's soccer team a 2-1 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) victory over Emmanuel College on Saturday evening.
Junior Tyler Hartlage from Tampa, Fla., opened the scoring off a nifty passing play from Esteban Angel of Guayaquil, Ecuador, and Culotta in the 33rd minute, but Emmanuel (6-3, 1-3 SSAC) would answer back with a tying goal by Morgan Anders in the 60th minute.
Culotta, a senior from New Orleans, La., would punch in the deciding goal via an assist by Hartlage with just 2:39 left on the clock.
SHC goalkeeper sophomore Jacob Files of Clinton, Miss., made one save against 10 shots by the Lions as the Badger defense kept the Emmanuel line at arms' length for much of the match while the Lions' Sebastian Jones also made just one save against eight Badger shots. The shutout was the second time this season the Badgers kept an opponent from scoring.
Emmanuel took seven attempts from the corners and limited SHC to just two tries from the corners.
The Badgers (5-5, 2-2 SSAC) will next travel to Jackson, Miss., on Wednesday to face the 4th-ranked and defending NAIA National Champion Belhaven University Blazers (8-2-1, 4-0 SSAC) at 7:30 p.m. on H.T. Newell Field.
