PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida Lady Argonauts soccer team handed the Spring Hill College Badgers a 4-0 non-conference loss at the UWF Soccer Complex on Monday night.
NCAA Division II's 12th-ranked Lady Argos (5-0-3) controlled the flow of play early in the contest and missed three early scoring opportunities when two excellent saves by Badger goalkeeper junior Abby Massengale were sandwiched around a deflected header of a free kick that sailed just over the crossbar.
Massengale continued to shine 18 minutes into the game as she made a cat-quick grab of a UWF shot from seven yards following the rebound of a free kick shot from 20 yards out that caught the crossbar. Two minutes later, the Argos caught Massengale out of position, but her defensive teammates covered the open goal and successfully stopped two Argo shots before clearing the ball to midfield.
West Florida took the lead in the 30th minute off a successful penalty kick by Kelly Andres following a Badger foul just inside the box on the right hand side.
Seven minutes into the second half, UWF made it a 2-0 game when Shelby Bush scored off an entry pass by Sara Helgadottir.
West Florida added a third goal with 26 minutes left on the clock when Kaitlyn Culotta's free kick was saved by reserve Badger keeper sophomore Maggie Dalessio but the rebound of the punch-a-way was cleaned up by Rachel Lassitter. Julianne Gaubron then made it 4-0 in the 79th minute off an assist by Freyja Vidarsdottir.
The Argos out-shot the Badgers 29-0 as Massengale made eight saves and Dalessio tallied three stops.
The Badgers (9-4, 4-2 SSAC) will next visit the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks (7-4, 3-2 SSAC) on Wednesday, October 16, at 2 p.m. at the AUM Soccer Complex.
