MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College women's soccer team took an important 1-0 SSAC road victory over the Faulkner University Lady Eagles at John Mark Stallings Field at the Dalraida Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Badgers scored in the 59th minute of play when freshman Jamie Townley of Pace, Fla., drove a shot across the face of the goal and into the lower left hand corner of the goal from 12 yards out via assists by senior midfielder Molly Cowley of Jefferson City, Mo., and junior midfielder Erin Claxton from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
SHC sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Dalessio of St. Petersburg, Fla., earned her sixth win and fourth shutout of the year as the Lady Eagles fell to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the SSAC.
It was the seventh shutout victory of the year for Spring Hill who has now outscored its opponents 76-21 in 2013. The win also snapped a three-game losing skid by SHC while securing the Badgers a spot in the conference championship tournament that begins on November 9 with the first round sites hosted by the top four seeded teams. Currently, SHC stands as the No. 5 team in the SSAC standings.
Today's victory assured the Badgers of their first winning regular season record since the 2008 SHC squad posted a 10-7-2 mark including a 4-2-2 record in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC).
The Badgers (10-5, 5-3 SSAC) next face archrival the University of Mobile Lady Rams (8-6-1, 6-2 SSAC) in a conference match at the UMobile Soccer Field on Saturday at 5 p.m.
