FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Spring Hill College women's basketball team wrapped up a four-game season-opening road swing with a 57-49 conference loss at Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon at Williamson Basketball Arena.
The Lady Lions (5-1, 2-0 SSAC East) led by as much as 21 points in the 2nd half after overcoming an early 1st-half lead by the Badgers. SHC cut the deficit down to 11 points at 42-31 at the 11:00 mark, but struggled to draw the Lions in any closer until junior Elissa VandeWaa of Spanish Fort made the score 47-39 with two free throws as 4:26 appeared on the clock. Emmanuel, however, regrouped late in the game to rebuild a 12-point advantage with 1:30 to play.
Spring Hill was paced by guards VandeWaa and Bethany Collins of Apex, N.C. with 13 points each as forward Camry Johnson of Mobile lead the team for the second consecutive night with 11 rebounds. Ashley Skelton led the Lions with 16 points and Joreshica Martin added 14 points.
As a team, SHC shot just 24.5% (13-53) from the field including a 26.7% (4-15) effort from 3-point distance. The Badgers out-rebounded the Warriors 35-31, but turnovers were still Spring Hill's Achilles Heel with 21 turnovers against five Lion steals while they benefited from just 13 fumbles by Emmanuel in the face of four Badger steals. EC shot 34.5% (19-55) overall and were 27.3% (3-11) from long distance.
