MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College volleyball team will open the 34th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship Tournament by hosting the Xavier University (La.) Gold Nuggets in an Opening Round match on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
This contest will be the third match up of the two long-time rivals this season with Spring Hill winning the two previous meetings 3-0. The teams opened the year with the Badgers winning 25-8, 25-20, 25-22 at home on August 23 and SHC again won at home on September 3 by in a 25-12, 25-20, 25-9 decision.
Xavier (26-7) is the 2013 regular season and tournament champions of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) while Spring Hill is the 2013 regular season and tournament champions of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). Both teams were undefeated in conference play this year with the Gold Nuggets boasting a 12-0 record and the Badgers going 14-0 for the third consecutive year.
Spring Hill (35-3) also broke into the 2013 NAIA National Rankings for the first time this season in the final regular season poll of the year by tallying 147 votes on Sunday for the 23rd spot in the poll.
